Even within a family, people have different opinions about the death of a pet.
Some people become deeply depressed, while others seem no different than usual.
In this article, we’ll introduce the story of Mr. D, whose family members had differing opinions.
My father told me about the last day of his beloved cat, Mii
Mii, a stray cat
It was many years ago.
When my grandmother was feeding a stray cat, she became attached to us, and before we knew it, she had started living in our home of our house.
Mii’s range of movement around the house expanded, and she began to freely enter and exit not only the entrance space but also the living room and bedroom.
And so Mii became our family cat.
After about five years, we somehow realized that she was nearing the end of her life.
She started sleeping longer and became less active.
Since she was originally a stray, we thought that she would go for a walk somewhere and die alone, but Mii passed away in a cardboard box in the garden, in the middle of the day when no one was home.
Differences in opinion within the family regarding the death of a cat
When Mii died, I cried for days.
My grandmother and mother looked sad, and they would sigh while doing housework and occasionally talk about Mii.
Naturally, I assumed my father felt the same.
But he told us:
“There’s no point in crying, crying won’t accomplish anything, don’t talk about Mii anymore.”
Since then, I began to distrust my father, and before I knew it, I had stopped speaking honestly with him.
My father’s true feelings
A few years later, one day,
At a gathering of relatives, we started talking about pets we had kept.
All of our relatives had kept pets at some point, like dogs or cats.
When the topic turned to saying goodbye, my father showed this side of himself.
“Mii’s final moments were spent in a cardboard box in the garden from the morning, and since I was the last one to leave the house, I couldn’t take the day off work, so I gave her a final pat on the face. I knew that today was the day we’d had to say goodbye…”
At that moment, my father’s voice choked up and he started to cry, and he quickly stood up and left the room.
I’d never seen my father like that before.
I realized for the first time that he’d been lonely, too.
Now with the next cat
After that, my distrust completely disappeared, and I had a lap blanket made for Mii as a birthday present for my father.
In fact, after that, we rescued another stray cat and named it Mii, but that cat also passed away, and now we are fostering a cat from a shelter.
My grandmother passed away, and I got married and moved out, so it’s just my parents and the cat living here.
Sasuke’s regular spot on top of the refrigerator, where Mii always used to be.
It was because of that day that I understood my father’s true feelings that I was able to accept our next child.
Feelings differ even within the family, and no matter how much you talk about it, it’s very difficult to know the other person’s true feelings.
At times like those, pets may help family members feel closer to each other.
Maybe pets understand all of our feelings.
