When it comes to coping with pet loss, I believe the most important factor for healing is having someone who can truly empathize with your feelings.
Having a person who can cry with you.
Having someone nearby who understands your pain.
Even that alone can bring a sense of relief and comfort to a grieving heart.
Many of my customers tell me this after sharing their stories:
“Thank you for listening to me.”
Another once said:
“This is the first time I’ve ever been able to talk about how I really feel.”
Although my work is to create custom pet memorial goods—knitted cushions and stoles based on a beloved pet’s photo—sometimes I realize that what truly makes people happy is not just the item itself, but having someone to talk to.
And when those memories remain close at hand, woven into a cushion or a stole, people can hold onto the warmth of their pet in a very tangible way. That, I feel, is the true role of my work.
How Customers’ Feelings Begin to Change
At first, many emails I receive are filled with overwhelming sadness. I do my best to respond with empathy, hoping that my words and presence can provide some small support.
But over time, as we exchange messages through email or LINE, I notice that gradually more positive words begin to appear.
Talking to someone—being heard and understood—lightens the burden. It gives people the strength to move forward. While the loneliness of grief may never disappear completely, it allows them to also recall the happy memories they shared with their pet.
Family members or partners, who shared the same time with the pet, are often in the best position to offer that kind of understanding and comfort.
If someone close to you is grieving, please listen to them. Truly listen.
And perhaps, for those who have no one else to talk to, that is why they come to us with their requests.
I hope the cushions we create can become a source of comfort. That is why I continue to dedicate myself to this work every day.
